WYN MATTHEWS

I walked into a potter's studio in the summer of 1969. My heart and head exploded. I knew I HAD to do this. I don't know where that knowing came from, but it was so strong, I followed. Years later I discovered that this flame that KNEW I needed to make pots is the same flame that creates when the mind is quiet and one is a hollow vessel the energy flows through. I quickly became one of a handful of production potters wholesaling up and down the East Coast. In subsequent decades, I’ve co-owned Riverworks Craft Gallery, in Savannah, Georgia; worked in various pottery communities, and produced a wide range of functional wares in earthenware, stoneware, porcelain and a clay body called “Flameware” for stovetop cooking. I love to teach. I've taught in private schools, public schools through State Arts Commissions, regional art and craft centers, held classes in my own studios and have had apprentices. My pots are heavily influenced by the cultures and aesthetics of early high-fired pottery: China, Korea and Japan. I love simple, classic shapes.
