In her lush, abstract paintings, Ariel Dill explores color, pattern, and the power of the brushstroke, in its endless variations, to animate the still plane of the canvas with a sense of depth and movement. Working primarily with mid-sized canvases, she produces seemingly limitless variations on these themes. In her quieter, sparer compositions, like Volunteer (2012), she focuses with exquisite subtlety on the range of tones within individual colors, in this case blue and orange, and on the interplay between them. In her more vigorously painted works, like Glyph (2013), she consumes the canvas with her allover compositions, weaving together different colors, forms, and brushstrokes into patterns that resemble quilts or textiles. Dill revels in her medium, demonstrating, with each new work, the rich and surprising potential of paint.
