MORE INFO:

Explore one of the oldest ceramic traditions in this hands-on pit-firing workshop inspired by ancient pottery practices from around the world. Participants will create a small sculptural ceramic form and take part in a communal outdoor firing that uses fire, smoke, and natural materials to produce rich, unpredictable surface effects.

In the first session, students will learn basic handbuilding techniques and sculpt a clay form inspired by prehistoric Venus and goddess figures, while gaining insight into the archaeological and cultural history of pit firing. Pieces will be hollowed and prepared for firing, with an optional introduction to burnishing and terra sigillata to enhance surface sheen.

The second session takes place outdoors, where students will participate in the pit-firing process using sawdust, wood, and a variety of organic materials such as leaves, coffee grounds, and seaweed, along with select metals and salts. Wrapped and fired in a low-temperature open fire, each piece will emerge with unique markings shaped by flame, smoke, and chance. While the the ceramic figures are in the pit fire students will have lunch together (bring your own lunch) and then sand and paint a wood base for your sculpture. Once the fire has cooled students will pull their figures from the pit followed by cleaning and waxing the figures to reveal the colors and markings.

This workshop emphasizes process, experimentation, and connection to ancient craft traditions. No prior ceramics experience is necessary. Finished pieces are decorative and not intended for functional use.
